A spokesperson for Pinterest tells Mashable there are no current plans to integrate the two products. But it appears the plans is to keep the two separate - at least for now. The acquisition also raises the question of whether Instapaper could eventually be integrated into Pinterest, as many users already use the site to save articles, recipes, and other content. The company previewed a new search feature earlier this summer that allows users to search and buy products by taking a photo with their smartphone. The site has recently doubled down on its shift toward e-commerce, and visual search and better discovery tools have been key to those efforts. But it appears Pinterest is particularly interested in using the Instapaper team to help build out its search and discovery features. Startup studio Betaworks bought a majority stake in the company in 2013 after founder Marco Arment said the app had "grown far beyond what one person can do."Īt first glance, Instapaper, an app that allows users to save articles to read later, may seem like an odd target for the visual bookmarking site. Pinterest's acquisition marks the second time Instapaper has changed hands. The terms of the exit deal between Instant Paper and Pinterest weren’t announced, but the newly-formed company will most certainly be focused on becoming GDPR-compliant, as it has been offline in Europe since May (when GDPR went into effect).ĭo you still use Instapaper? How about Pocket? Let us know below."Instapaper will work with us to continue building indexing and recommendations technologies, and we look forward to building great products together," Pinterest's lead project manager Steve Davis said in a statement. You can even send text straight to your dedicated e-readers for even more accessibility.įour months ago, we called Instapaper one of the “ 5 apps that will make your life incredibly easier.” From there, the bookmarked media is easy to organize into folders for later use. Our focus is providing a great reading application to our users, we appreciated the opportunity to do that at Pinterest, and are excited to continue our work.įirst launched in 2008 by Arment, Instapaper allows you to save articles for offline reading across multiple platforms. With their support, we rebuilt search, introduced an extension for Firefox, made a variety of optimizations for the latest mobile operating systems and more. Lastly, we want to express our deepest gratitude to Pinterest for being such great stewards of the product over the past two years. In a newsworthy move that in all likelihood makes lots of sense, the photo sharing service Pinterest has. It still hopes to provide “a robust service that focuses on readers and the reading experience for the foreseeable future.” The Instapaper team says not much will change once it becomes independent again sometime in August. In that year, Marco Arment sold the service to Betaworks, which sold it to Pinterest in 2016. In a Monday blog post, Instapaper explains that the new company, Instant Paper, Inc., is owned and operated by the same people who’ve been working on Instapaper since 2013. The end of the two-year partnership will see the read-it-later and bookmarking service once again become an independent operation. Instapaper and Pinterest are breaking up.
